sketch of scuba diver on brown paper

sketch of cartoon face on brown envelope

There are two sketches tonight because they are both for the same assignment and I thought it would be interesting to post both. One of the things I love about the Sketchbook Skool community is the continuing inspiration we get from our fellow artists and teachers. This week we were asked to experiment with watercolor on tinted paper. Both sketches are on brown acid-free paper I found for art purposes. It’s hard to get a lot of light with the dark paper. In the first sketch (the scuba diver toy), I ended up using watercolor pencil over the paint and diluted ink to try to bring in some brightness. I think it helped. The second one is also a mix of watercolor paint and pencil, with strong layers of the yellow paint around the figure, which is an envelope which I pasted into my sketchbook. It’s certainly a challenge, but one I’ll try again. I’m eager to experiment with my grey paper and also to try adding some gouache into the mix. I think I’ll also try the scuba diver again sometime. He was fun to sketch.

Comments are awesome! I'd love to hear them (but if you're only here to be a troll, please go back to your cave)
